BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Comedy Gala returns to London’s historic Hackney Empire this February, showcasing both established stars and emerging voices from the Black British comedy scene.
A Night of Laughter Returns
The lights will dim once again at Hackney Empire on February 5, 2026, as BBC Radio 1Xtra brings back its celebrated Comedy Gala. After a successful debut in 2024, the event returns with Eddie Kadi once more taking the helm as host, promising ‘an unforgettable show featuring good vibes and entertainment.’
The lineup reads like a who’s who of Black British comedy talent. Kyrah Gray, Junior Booker, Emmanuel Sonubi, Annette Fagon, and Travis Jay are among the performers set to take the stage. The evening will also feature a special live set from Rampage Sound, adding a musical element to the comedy showcase.
More Than Just Comedy
For Kadi, this gala represents something deeper than just a night of laughs. ‘I’ve always envisioned creating an event that truly celebrates the phenomenal Black British talent we have in the UK,’ he explained when the 2026 show was announced. The first gala ‘surpassed all expectations,’ making this return engagement all the more anticipated.
The BBC describes the event as delivering ‘a night full of laughter provided by a fantastic line-up of established comedians on the Black comedy circuit and also some phenomenal up-and-coming names.’ It’s this blend of household names and fresh voices that gives the gala its unique character, offering audiences both familiar favorites and the chance to discover tomorrow’s comedy stars.
A Perfect Venue for Comedy History
The choice of Hackney Empire as the venue couldn’t be more fitting. This Grade II* listed building has been a cornerstone of British entertainment since 1901, when it first opened as a music hall designed by renowned architect Frank Matcham. Over its 125-year history, the venue has hosted everyone from Charlie Chaplin and Marie Lloyd to modern comedy legends.
The Empire played a crucial role in the alternative comedy boom of the 1980s, helping launch the careers of performers like Ben Elton, Dawn French, and Jennifer Saunders. After a £17 million restoration completed in 2004, the venue now seats nearly 1,300 people and continues to serve as a launching pad for new talent.
Beyond the Live Show
While the live experience at the Empire promises to be electric, the gala’s reach extends far beyond the 291 Mare Street address. The show will be recorded for broadcast on BBC One at 11:40 PM on February 22, 2026, bringing the laughter into living rooms across the UK.
For those who prefer streaming, the performance will also be available through BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds, ensuring that comedy fans who can’t make it to East London won’t miss out on the action.
A Celebration of Identity and Creativity
The 1Xtra Comedy Gala represents more than entertainment – it’s a celebration of identity, creativity, and the power of laughter to bring people together. In an era when representation in comedy continues to evolve, events like this provide crucial platforms for Black British performers to showcase their talents to wider audiences.
The minimum age for attendance is 18, and tickets are limited to six per person, reflecting the intimate nature of the event despite the grand venue. For those planning to attend, the Empire is easily accessible via Hackney Central station on the London Overground, making it a convenient destination for comedy lovers from across the capital and beyond.
