LaBeouf's Mardi Gras Meltdown: Actor Faces Battery Charges After Alleged Homophobic Attack

The Transformers star was arrested in New Orleans after allegedly using slurs against two men, one in drag, during a violent altercation outside a French Quarter bar.

The carnival atmosphere of New OrleansMardi Gras took a dark turn early Tuesday morning when Shia LaBeouf was arrested on battery charges following what witnesses describe as a hate-fueled attack. The 39-year-old actor allegedly hurled homophobic slurs at two men before physically assaulting them outside a French Quarter bar.

Jeffrey Damnit, one of the alleged victims who was celebrating in drag, told reporters that LaBeouf screamed ‘You’re a fucking faggot’ while attempting to beat him up. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Royal Street, just as the city’s famous Fat Tuesday celebrations were reaching their peak. Video footage later showed LaBeouf in the back of a vehicle being examined by paramedics, still directing the slur at Damnit.

The second victim, Nathan Thomas Reed, who identifies as queer, confirmed he was also targeted with homophobic language. ‘I want it to be known that he was calling people faggot,’ Reed said via text message. Police reports indicate LaBeouf was heard saying ‘These faggots put me in jail’ while referencing his Catholic faith, though this detail was omitted from the official court documents.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, LaBeouf had been causing a disturbance at R Bar in the Faubourg Marigny district. When staff attempted to eject him, he allegedly struck one victim multiple times with closed fists. After leaving, he returned ‘acting even more aggressive’ and resumed the assault before punching another person in the nose.

The actor was eventually restrained by bystanders until police arrived. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries before being charged with two counts of simple battery. By Tuesday afternoon, LaBeouf had been released on his own recognizance and was spotted on Bourbon Street with Mardi Gras beads around his neck, telling reporters that the festival was ‘amazing.’

This latest incident adds to LaBeouf‘s lengthy history of legal troubles and controversial behavior. The former Disney Channel star, who rose to fame in the Transformers franchise, has faced multiple arrests over the past decade, including charges related to public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and domestic violence allegations from his ex-partner FKA twigs.

Damnit, who resides in Los Angeles and works as an actor, said he hopes the incident will prompt Sean Astin, president of the Screen Actors Guild, to investigate whether it’s safe for LaBeouf to work with other union members. ‘At any other day job, that would happen,’ he noted.

The timing of the alleged hate crime has particularly concerned LGBTQ+ advocates. Kyle DeVries, president of the New Orleans Pride Center, warned that celebrity attacks on already vulnerable communities could embolden others. ‘When you have someone with celebrity status attacking communities already so under attack, it could give others permission to do the same,’ he said.

The incident comes at a time when LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have documented rising attacks based on gender identity and sexual orientation across the United States. Republican-controlled states have increasingly eliminated or restricted rights and protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, creating what advocates describe as a dangerous climate of normalized discrimination.

LaBeouf‘s representatives have not responded to requests for comment about the allegations. The case remains under investigation, with police indicating they will provide updates as additional information becomes available. For now, the actor who once claimed to have achieved sobriety faces yet another legal battle that threatens to further damage his already troubled career.
