In a storybook moment at the Milan Olympics, Team USA hockey captain Hilary Knight proposed to speedskater Brittany Bowe, bringing their Olympic love story full circle four years after they first connected in Beijing.
A Proposal Four Years in the Making
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Just hours before Hilary Knight was set to lead Team USA into the women’s hockey gold medal game against Canada, she got down on one knee in the Olympic Village in Milan. Her girlfriend, four-time Olympian speedskater Brittany Bowe, said yes.
‘Olympics brought us together,’ Knight wrote on her Instagram post announcing the engagement on February 18. ‘This one made us forever.’ The proposal video showed the couple in casual sweatpants, making the moment feel beautifully authentic rather than staged for the cameras.
Knight had been planning this moment for months, keeping the secret close to her chest. She’d even had the ring ready for several months, waiting for the right moment. When teammate Kendall Coyne Schofield heard about the plan Wednesday morning, she ‘almost fell off the table’ in excitement.
From Masked Walks to Olympic Romance
Their love story began in the most unlikely circumstances. While both athletes had crossed paths for years at various competitions, it was the 2022 Beijing Olympics that truly brought them together. The pandemic protocols meant they had to wear masks during interactions, creating an unusual backdrop for romance.
‘We really got to know each other in Beijing and have really been inseparable ever since,’ Bowe explained. The couple would take evening walks together, finding ways to connect despite the strict COVID-19 restrictions. ‘It was just a really good way to get to know her, going for walks, getting out of our suites,’ Knight recalled.
What struck Bowe most was discovering Knight’s softer side. ‘Knowing her as a hockey player, it’s like this big, strong, powerful female,’ she said. ‘But then, when we got to know each other, she was soft, genuine, kind, almost shy. That really sparked my interest.’
Two Legends at Their Final Games
The engagement takes on extra significance as both athletes have announced that Milan 2026 will be their final Olympics. Knight, competing in her fifth Winter Games, has become the first U.S. hockey player to participate in five Olympics. She’s already won one Olympic gold (2018) and three silvers, making her one of the most decorated players in the sport’s history.
Bowe, at 37, is wrapping up her fourth Olympic appearance. She holds two Olympic bronze medals and set a speedskating world record in 2019. In Milan, she narrowly missed the podium in the 1000-meter event, finishing fourth by just 0.6 seconds. Her final race, the 1500-meter, is scheduled for Friday, February 20.
Both athletes plan different paths after these Games. While Knight will retire from international competition, she’ll continue her professional career with the Professional Women’s Hockey League, captaining the Seattle Torrent. Bowe, meanwhile, plans to retire from competitive speedskating entirely.
Perfect Timing for a Perfect Moment
Knight’s decision to propose at the Olympics wasn’t impulsive. She had initially considered something more traditional, perhaps during a hike, but it didn’t feel right. The couple had discussed marriage in general terms, but Knight had always said ‘never at the Olympics.’
Yet as the Milan Games approached, the symbolism became too powerful to ignore. ‘I thought what better moment than to do it at the Olympics where we met, where we’ve spent most of our lives prepping for and just owning the world stage,’ Knight explained. The proposal brought their relationship full circle, from those masked walks in Beijing to this intimate moment in Milan.
The engagement has sparked joy throughout the Olympic community. Fellow athletes flooded their social media with congratulations, with retired figure skater Adam Rippon joking about how they got engaged in sweatpants. Bronze medal rugby player Ilona Maher exclaimed ‘happy days’ in the comments.
Love Conquers All
Their relationship works because they understand each other’s world. Both know the pressures and demands of elite competition. ‘As top-tier athletes, you really know what that person may need, whether it’s support or space,’ Knight noted. ‘Both of us being at a high level for a pretty long time helps us understand one another.’
The couple owns a house in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the U.S. speedskating team trains. Their winter schedules often keep them apart – Bowe travels globally for World Cup competitions while Knight spends time across different U.S. cities for PWHL games. In the offseason, they make the most of their time together, gardening, cycling, and playing pickleball.
Knight and Bowe aren’t the only Team USA athletes to get engaged at these Games. Downhill gold medalist Breezy Johnson was also proposed to last week after her super-G race, making love truly in the air at Milan 2026. For Knight and Bowe, though, this engagement represents something even more precious than Olympic medals – a love that began on Olympic ice and will last far beyond their competitive careers.
